The Matt Ratana Rugby Foundation has been announced as the Gold Charity Partner of Spartan Race in the UK for 2022.
The Matt Ratana Rugby Foundation (MRRF) supports young people at risk of exclusion, difficult times or on the fringe of joining gangs, and encourages them to practice self-acceptance, develop their
mental strength and improve their overall self-confidence; to be the very best version of themselves. Funds raised by the foundation will go towards the design and delivery of community initiatives for children and young adults both nationally and internationally. The programmes will provide wrap-around support, being there for the people that need it most.
The MRRF was set up in response to the tragic death of Metropolitan police Sergeant, Matt Ratana who was shot and killed on duty in 2020. Aside from his work in the police, Matt worked tirelessly as
rugby coach and mentor for all ages. The values of MRRF are inspired by Matt’s beliefs.
Sean Morgan, director of the MRRF said: “Just like rugby, Spartan Race allows people to test themselves in new ways. This partnership will help us to build a legacy that Matt would have been proud of.”
Matt Brooke, CEO of Spartan UK said “Spartans know the importance of leaving no man or woman behind. This is as true off the course as it is on it. As a proud Kiwi Matt often spoke about the importance of ‘Whānau’, which in Maori means your community; your family.”
“He inspired people he coached, from all walks of life, to achieve things they didn’t think they were capable of and achieve fulfilment. It is a testament to Matt’s impact on those in his community that the MRRF was founded in his name. Spartan are proud to partner with a foundation that shares the same values and we do and we hope to be welcoming many MRRF participants and supporters at Spartan Races throughout the year.”
